GOAL
Initially NAMUH had been contracted by CARE to film an interview with a delegate while she was on a CARE Learning Tour in Rwanda. This interview would be included in a short film featuring two bipartisan voices on the importance of international family planning programs.
We were also requested to collect interviews and b-roll of CARE staff and beneficiaries to create additional videos that would show the impact of CARE and their partners in Rwanda.
CHALLENGE
The delegate who we were supposed to interview unfortunately had to cancel last minute, resulting in a change of plans regarding our brief. As we continued filming b-roll of the various programs visited by the CARE Learning Tour in Rwanda, CARE decided to focus on a VSLA participant named Thérèse, who had a great story.
Thérèse‘s house was located over three hours from Kigali and she was the last person we visited, so we had limited time before we needed to head back. In less than three hours, we shot her interview with a translator and filmed b-roll to go along with her film. The short film would focus on CARE’s Gender Equality & Women’s Economic Empowerment Program (GEWEP).
SOLUTION
The change of plans regarding the video was a minor setback, but we managed to create a video featuring Thérèse and her inspiring story through the creative use of the limited b-roll filmed. To help fill in some of the gaps, we were able to use b-roll of other programs visited during our time in country.
RESULTS
We produced a 1:30 short social media optimized film showcasing the importance of women economic empowerment by following the story of Thérèse, a woman who used to work in other people’s fields for an income. But with the training provided by CARE through its Gender Equality & Women’s Economic Empowerment Program (GEWEP), Thérèse has become a successful businesswoman in her village, as well as being elected president of the local Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) and becoming her district’s community agent.
